This first edition of Stylish Mom Outfit is brought to you by Easter and the excessive amount egg hunting we’ve done this year!
Hello, friends! Happy Easter! In our little town, there aren’t a whole lot of community egg hunts. But this year, there was one at my in-law’s church, where they filled 1,800 eggs for kids to find.
Now, this sounds like a lot of eggs — but you never know just how many kids might show up, especially when the even happens on the first 70-degree day in over literally half a year. So when my initial, knee jerk shoe reaction was to reach for those fabulous new espadrilles I kept from my trunk (read my April Trunk Club review!), I had to pause and really consider my best shoe options. After all, I’d much prefer not spending my Easter on crutches if I twisted my ankle in a competitive egg hunting moment with hundreds of preschoolers.
So, practical mom-life won out: no three-inch espadrilles for me.
Darn being a mom with common sense!
Luckily, I had another new shoe option: ROTHY’S.
I purchased these back in January as a little “pick-me-up” when things weren’t going well (I know, shame on me for emotional buying). But considering our winter lasted an eternity, I’ve only been able to wear them once.
Anyway, they checked all of my boxes for egg hunt day:
- Stylish, yet totally practical.
- No risk of rolling an ankle (well, besides sheer clumsiness and a dash of bad luck).
- If they get muddy from the potential mud found in Minnesota at this time of year (thanks to melting snow), you can put them in the washing machine!
The rest of the outfit is a comfortable, easy combination for a busy mom who needs to be able to run, jump, climb, carry a kid or two on her hip and generally take on the world: jeans, an embellished t-shirt and a knit blazer.
Here, I opted for a dark, high waisted-denim. I generally pick out high-waisted these days (as my high school self cringes), but especially when I know I’ll be squatting down and active with the kids. I have zero interest in having a group of five-year-olds giggling behind me while parts of my backside are more exposed than I’d like.
Now, let’s talk t-shirts: there’s totally nothing wrong with a plain tee in a flattering cut. In fact, some of my favorites include these v-necks from J. Crew. However, a few years ago, I decided to start seeking out tees with something that makes them just a little “special”. This might mean an embellishment of some sort or unique design feature.
What I love about these types of pieces is they dress an outfit up just enough to make it a little more unique — not quite the same as everything else you see. It’s the perfect “elevation” for a casual mom outfit to become something that stands out.
In this case, it’s the little poms around the neckline and sleeves.
I fell in love with this top the instant I saw it. The poms aren’t so big they look like they belong on a clown’s outfit, which can be an issue with this type of embellishment. Still, they aren’t small enough to go unnoticed.
My whole look was topped off with a striped knit blazer. Super comfy, plus a little extra warmth for when the sun went behind the clouds, plus the added “third element” (for another post!) made it a win all-around.
Even without the blazer, elevated tees are a great standalone wardrobe staple, especially with summer in view. A pair of boyfriend denim or cute shorts, plus a tee with a little somethin’ somethin’, maybe a pair of espadrille wedges (if you’re not planning on running through the grass, pushing down kids to compete for candy filled eggs), and you’ve got a foolproof summer go-to.
Here are a few other great options for some of those “special” tees I’m seeing right now. Don’t forget to pin it so you can find them or just get some style inspiration easily later!
